A bit about the project:
Who is Orson? Orson is the love child of the University of Canberra’s most creative students, alumni and Citizen Kane. That’s a bit of a strange sentence isn’t it? Let’s back track on this narrative.
A year and a half ago UC Life! were presented with an empty space and a need. The empty space, a triangle of concrete and glass under the new Cooper Lodge Residences at UC. The need, to create a hive of activity, creativity and inspiration for UC students to call their own. The solution… Obviously… To open a bar.
ing built from the ground up entirely by UC Students and Alumni, led by Pat Rose (the creative powerhouse behind cult nightlife sensation The Chop Shop); a core group of individuals have been commissioned to build a bar on the back of what they have learnt in the their time at UC and it has led to some remarkable results. Custom built furnishings fabricated on campus, a student workforce and an outdoor cinema to name a few highlights.
Having put in place an outdoor cinema the team took inspiration from the era and the man that changed cinema forever, Orson Welles and the golden age of American Cinema. Sculpting a menu brimming with Americana splashed into a gastro pub, a popcorn machine filling the bar with that buttery air and a wild eyed character to flagship the whole project.
Enter Orson, our little beast and our little director. Designed by UC Student and upcoming graphic designer Chelsea Agno aka Mr. Manok, Orson is a face of energy, a little bit devious and a bit too cute. Orson is set to become the face of cool, quality and student engagement on campus. If you see him, be sure to see what he has to say.
The last thing the team needed… A name… And to pay further homage to Orson Welles and the inspiration that pulled the whole project together… The Well came to the lips and stayed with a sensational flavor.
That’s the story of Orson, The Well and the new hub of everything you want to be a part of on campus at The University of Canberra. Shall we roll credits?
